Isaac Tembine is director of the new Second Cycle (7th-9th grades) at Terely, Mali. He was presented with three empty classrooms and three adjunct teachers and instructed to educate three hundred students in the curriculum of 7th through 9th grades. Working with the village primary school and visiting tourists, he managed to find desks for his students to share, and has instituted a rigorous academic climate. Seeking to help his students with better-outfitted classrooms and materials, he decided to create a school garden. With the garden, his students can learn about horticulture and at the same time earn money to buy educational materials by selling the produce. Because the school area is frequented by livestock that seek any edible greenery in the arid landscape, a sturdy fence is necessary to make a garden possible. Tandana has provided funding for the fence and its construction is underway. There is a well nearby, from which students can irrigate the garden.
