Beekeeping in the Ecuador Highlands Learn about beekeeping in the Ecuador Highlands with experienced apiculturist Rumi Santillan. He will demonstrate how he works with his bee colonies, and share how beekeeping went from being a hobby to becoming a family activity and local business.
Music in the Ecuador Highlands Join us for a virtual concert of Andean music with a local band, and learn about the different rhythms and instruments featured in traditional music in Otavalo, Ecuador. In addition to hearing the group play various songs, you will learn about the meaning behind the tunes and lyrics of each one.
Traditional Dance in the Ecuador Highlands Experience traditional dances of the Ecuador Highlands with Sumak Sisay, a youth dance group from the San Pedro de Cotacachi community. Learn about the meaning behind traditional dances done in the Andes, watch the group perform, and hear about how young people connect with their Kichwa culture through dance.
Arroz con Leche and Molo- Ecuadorian Easter Treats! In this interactive cooking class you will learn to make a dessert and side dish that are typically served during the Easter season. Practice making Arroz con leche (sweet rice pudding) and molo (potato puree) to add to your holiday table or next special meal. In addition to making these two dishes, you will learn about other traditional foods eaten in Ecuador during this time of year.
Dogon Dancing and Drumming in Mali's Bandiagara District Join us for a virtual demonstration to learn about Dogon dances, including men's, women's, and shepherd's styles of dancing. Practice these dances while listening to percussion from drums and locally-made instruments. Hear about customs related to dancing and the invention of songs. Dancers from Sal-Dimi, Mali will demonstrate and describe these traditions.
